What Is Vehicle-to-Home?

Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) is bidirectional EV charging in reverse — instead of only pulling power into your car, a V2H system lets you push stored energy out of the battery and into your home's circuits. Think of your electric car as a 40–80 kWh battery on wheels that happens to be parked on your driveway for 20+ hours a day.

The concept sits alongside two related technologies: V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid), which exports power back to the National Grid, and V2L (Vehicle-to-Load), which powers individual appliances via a socket on the car. V2H is the most practical for most homeowners — no grid export licence required, no smart meter dependency, just your car and your house.

V2H is not the same as a home battery like a Tesla Powerwall. Your car battery is much larger — but it's also your transport. The key question is always: will the car be charged enough when I need to drive?

Which EVs Support V2H in the UK?

As of August 2026, true V2H capability in the UK is limited to a handful of vehicles. The technology requires a CHAdeMO or bidirectional CCS port — most mainstream EVs only support one-way AC/DC charging.

The catch

Battery Degradation: The Hidden Cost

Every charge/discharge cycle degrades your EV battery slightly. Using your car as a daily home battery accelerates this — potentially reducing range and resale value over time. Nissan and Mitsubishi have engineered their V2H-compatible models to handle bidirectional cycling, but third-party V2H adapters on non-approved vehicles carry real warranty risk.

Before installing V2H, confirm in writing with your manufacturer that bidirectional discharge will not void your battery warranty. Most manufacturers outside Nissan and Mitsubishi currently do not support it.

Can I use my electric car battery to power my house in the UK?

Does V2H void my EV warranty?
